The DPS is an application designed to be offered to different kind of users belonging to various business entities.
Within the DPS, you can configure User Types, which are described by a name and a set of permissions.
User types are then used to:
-
Provide the user with specific views of the connected products (e.g. Technicians will access the technical views).
-
Enable or limit the user’s capabilities to the business objects (e.g. Read/Update Customers, Read/Update Things).
-
Enable or disable specific features.

Editing User Types
DPS comes with a set of predefined user-types that can be assigned to users, but if you need to create new ones or review them, you can access the Access and Security/User Types page. In this page, you can find a matrix allowing you to configure the permissions associated with each user-type.
Here you can manage all the user-types of your DPS application. By pressing the Add User Type button, you can create a new user-type.
A user-type is described by:
- Group: the group that shares the same needs and user experience, to which the user type belongs.
- Name: the name of the user-type displayed in the users' management page.
- Category: the category to which this user-type belongs, used to filter user-types based on the entity with which the user is associated.
- Default: the flag indicating whether this user-type is the default one for the category. When a new user is created, it is associated to the default user-type according to the category.
- Rank: a value used to prevent a user from updating another user with a higher or equal rank.
For example, a technical user cannot delete or edit a manager. - Permissions: the set of permissions associated with the user-type.
For a complete overview of all permissions, refer to the article User Permissions.
Note that, a user-type can be deleted only if there are no DPS users associated with it.
